Your Assessment and Lessons

Whether you are learning English in General English or in the context of a specialist area such as Business English, Academic English, or Legal English, the content of my lessons always reflects your needs and preferences, which I determine both initiallly and on an on-going basis as you progress during your course of study.

In your first lesson, I make an Initial Assessment of your English to establish your level. So that you progress in the quickest possible time, we discuss your language needs, interests, and personal preferences, and determine which areas we will focus on  - you may need help in developing any or all of your four English skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), within which I teach you specific skills such as comprehension, grammar, punctuation, spelling, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, etc. Then I plan your future lessons or course of study with you so that you receive the help you need. I then give you your first tuition, usually on your most urgent area of need. We also of course start to get to know each other!

During each lesson I continually assess your english level, needs, interests, and preferences, which may change as your English improves, as well as your progress, in an Ongoing Assessment, and tailor future lessons to suit them exactly.

Your individual needs, interests, and preferences are assessed, lessons prepared to suit them, and together we deal with the areas which you find most difficult. I help you to achieve your desired goals as quickly as possible. You can have as many or as few lessons as you wish, you are under no obligation at all, and your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed or you pay nothing.

Your Materials  I teach using a variety of materials - which ones we use depends upon which are the most suitable for you, given your level and ability, and your specific needs, interests, and preferences. I suppy all the materials but you may, of course, bring your own, eg textbooks, workbooks, and whatever you find useful.

Your Progress  How fast you make progress obviously depends upon how quickly you learn. This depends in turn upon your natural ability, the time you can make available to do the homework I give you, and how much and how effectively you study between lessons. I give you guidance on all of these points, and teach you study techniques to maximise your effectiveness at learning the English language.

Your Homework  I give you homework at the end of every lesson to reinforce and develop what I have taught you. The amount of time you are able to make available to do your homework is crucial to the speed at which you make progress. At the beginning of every lesson I check your homework, which forms the basis of the next steps we can take and the progress you can make.

Online tuition  This is very effective. Tuition takes place over Skype (which enables you to make and receive internet telephone calls) - we use headsets for speaking and listening, and Skype messages, Skype file transfer, and emails for reading and writing.
